2015 will be a critical year for k-12 education. We have the opportunity to lean forward and continue to make progress with personalized learning for every child. 2014 Wishes - Some Were Granted As I was preparing to write this post, I reflected on some of my previous New Year’s predictions and observations. In 2013, I wrote a post, with five wishes and looking back it is interesting to see how many came true: Allow schools to try new models without too much criticism or scrutiny while they try to figure this (personalized learning) out. Looking back at 2014: Over the past two years, a lot of models were tried. Our team at Education Elements helped districts with hundreds of school models and thirteen of the Next Generation Learning Challenge Grant winners are ones we’ve supported. As important as new models are, we also saw “old” models work and as Michael Horn predicted in 2013, the station rotation model is solid and expanding. This year, at iNACOL’s annual conference on blended and online learning, we were honored to host and celebrate the launch of Michael Horn’s and Heather Staker’s book, “Blended: Using Disruptive Innovation to Improve Schools.” For a special edition of the book, they allowed me to write a preface focused on how superintendents should think about blended learning, and I’m grateful for that. If you didn’t make it to the book launch party in Palm Springs, you missed some good fun, but don’t worry, you can still get a copy of the preface here. Both Michael and Heather are two amazing people who truly care about innovation in education. I’m thankful for the work they do to provide thought leadership in making blended learning and innovation a way of life for all educators and students.

While our focus is on districts, I recently met with one of the premier private schools in New York City, which charges $40,000 per year tuition. Based upon what I can see, the teachers were very much personalizing learning students and the students were tremendously engage working in small groups, but they also had only 10-12 students in each class. When we sat down to meet the administration, they were starving for more data. Data to personalize learning more frequently and more accurately for each child. At the same time, they knew that data can often be overwhelming for teachers and eventually get ignored.

Recently, Joel Rose of New Classrooms posted a thought-provoking piece about some of the challenges he sees with the blended learning models that are not his own. I have heard the arguments before, but I have to disagree. We have seen the rotational model succeed again and again, and there are some very good reasons why it does.
