EE Summit | Innovative Leadership | Personalized Learning
Over the past few months Education Elements has had the pleasure of partnering with the Lexington Institute to provide support to its first class of Lexington Education Leadership Award fellows. As part of this support, we have been working with the ten district leaders selected to support the development of their personalized learning vision and helping them to take the next steps towards implementation. Lexington Institute just announced applications are open for a second round of fellows and we can't wait to see who gets selected as one of ten for this next round.

EE Summit | Education Elements | Innovative Leadership
Last week, 225 personalized learning leaders descended on Silicon Valley for the Education Elements PL Summit, which included visits to schools and businesses, and dynamic discussions about personalized learning at the San Jose TECH museum. Keynote speakers and company tours left participants inspired to create school environments where educators take risks and collaborate, and ultimately help today’s kindergarteners grow up ready for team-centric and innovative workplaces of tomorrow.

As a Senior Consultant at Education Elements I have the pleasure of visiting more than 100 schools and districts each year--- some are just starting to think about innovation and others have completely re-imagined the thing we call school. As I return to school sites over the course of a year or many years, one of my favorite moments is when the leaders I work with develop phrases, images, and metaphors that clearly articulate their goals and challenges around personalized learning. This week, Yuma School District One Superintendent Darwin Stiffler shared an image with me that I think captures so much of what we try to do in our work supporting districts. The picture above shows what often happens with a personalized learning initiative. Tech folks see it as a “device roll out,” instructional folks see it as “21st century learning,” teachers may see it as “another district initiative.” It’s essential we make it clear that personalized learning is the elephant, not just a tusk or a tail.

Yep, that’s me belting out “Roxanne” at our holiday party last December. Until a few years ago I swore I’d never karaoke and prefered singing to be something done in the my car or kitchen. But once I sang my first “Sweet Caroline” with a group of friends I was hooked. There’s something powerful about a group of people taking a risk together and attempting to follow along with “How Will I Know” (you’re welcome for that little Wednesday Whitney gift). It’s always rough for the first brave soul who steps up to sing, but it gets more fun and increasingly compelling as more people and voices join in. As Leadership Lessons From A Dancing Guy teaches us, “as more people jump in, it’s no longer risky...and that is how a movement is made.”
