Blended Learning Designs across the US--an Education Elements Perspective

One of the most common questions people ask us is “so what does blended learning look like?” The answer is that it depends. It depends on your needs and your goals. It depends on the strengths you want to build on and the gaps you want to fill.

It depends on the readiness of your schools and your teachers, on the infrastructure you have in place, on the computer ratio you can provide, on the physical set-up and size of your classrooms and on the time you can allocate. It depends on a tremendous number of things which is why we don’t drop a single model into every school, but instead use design-thinking to partner with schools to design the instructional model that works best for them. I know, you are nodding your head and agreeing but still thinking, “so what does it look like?”

In response to this question we have pulled together a few examples from designs in place across the country. Note that these are just a few examples and cover only 4 types of designs: Dynamic Rotation Model, ⅔ Group Rotation Model, 4 Group Rotation Model; and School-Wide Flex Model. 4 out of dozens and dozens that we have partnered to create. So its just a taste. But we think it should help to answer that question and let you imagine some of the possibilities.

You can check out one of the examples (Middletown, NY below). Or you can go here to download pictures, context, and descriptions for several different models.

In Middletown, NY, they have a 1:1 Chromebook ratio in most classrooms, providing teachers with a lot of flexibility for teachers to decide on how many groups, how long the lesson is blended, varies depending on the unit of focus per day or week. See below:
