Why it’s different in Texas

The Texas Odell High School Literacy Program (HSLP) is fully aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Every unit and lesson incorporates both Focus and Supporting TEKS—the curriculum standards established by the Texas Education Agency—and is supported by a robust evaluation framework that includes section diagnostics and culminating tasks.

What’s inside the curriculum

The Odell Education High School Literacy Program (HSLP) guides students through a three-phase learning journey—Foundation, Development, and Application Units—designed to foster inquiry, knowledge, and authentic expression.

Across each phase, students engage with diverse, high-quality texts and thought-provoking questions that connect literature to real-world ideas. Through collaborative research, critical reading, and structured discussions, they deepen their understanding and strengthen their voices as thinkers and communicators.

Each grade level features a rich collection of carefully curated texts that balance classic and contemporary voices. Districts receive more units than they need, allowing educators to choose the units that best support their students and district goals. Reading, writing, speaking, and listening are seamlessly woven into every lesson, supported by scaffolds, flexible pathways, and TEKS-aligned assessments that ensure all learners can access and demonstrate rigorous literacy learning.
