New Education Elements Toolkit Helps School Leaders Take DIY Approach to Student-Centered Instruction and Personalized Learning

The Personalized Learning Toolkit gives leaders premium content and tools proven to support effective and sustainable instructional shifts.

SAN CARLOS, CALIF. (April 16, 2019) – After eight years of working alongside school leaders, and a year of testing, Education Elements is making its personalized learning expertise and proven methodology widely available to schools and districts through the Personalized Learning Toolkit. The toolkit helps school leaders take a do-it-yourself approach to planning, designing, and launching a school- or district-level student-centered, personalized learning initiative.

During its work with more than 750 schools and 140 districts, Education Elements designed a four-step methodology for change – Plan & Align, Foundations, Design/Launch, and Support, Reflect, and Iterate – and ongoing face-to-face consultative support. To offer this model to individual schools that have limited budgets, Education Elements created the toolkit as an affordable solution. For schools purchasing the toolkit, there is an initial consultation and setup with an Education Elements personalized learning consultant, then it provides the same four-step methodology and provides the leader with everything needed to guide professional learning of their staff and inspire change.

“Personalized Learning requires an intentional, design thinking approach,” said Michael B. Horn, co-founder and distinguished fellow at The Christensen Institute. “That’s why I like the Personalized Learning Toolkit from Education Elements. It reflects their deep know-how. It’s perfect for the do-it-yourself school leader.”

The comprehensive toolkit includes everything that a leader who is short on time needs:

  • Customizable meeting and workshop agendas, slides, resources, and an implementation plan to guide the personalized learning initiative
  • Materials for teacher and leadership team workshops to help staff understand what personalized learning is and how and why it helps students
  • A School Reflection Journal to understand readiness for this instructional shift, guide reflection, and monitor progress
  • A Resource Library with best practice examples from schools and districts around the country

Before making it available nationwide, Education Elements wanted to collect feedback directly from the leaders who would benefit from using the Personalized Learning Toolkit so select districts were invited to pilot the kit for effectiveness. Heather Hurley, supervisor of personalized learning at Arlington Public Schools, was one of the leaders participating in the pilot. After several months of using the toolkit, Hurley sees it as offering significant help in leading district-wide change.

“The resources in the Personalized Learning Toolkit have been super valuable,” said Hurley. “Whereas I used to spend time researching activities and planning agendas for my schools, I am now able to leverage the resources directly from the kit. The kit also has a project management tool that keeps me very organized. It has streamlined our transformation process and I use it to track all of our monthly activities. It’s such a time saver and has helped me plan for next year.”
