Enlarged City School District of Middletown, NY

How Education Elements and Google for Education Helped Middletown Improve Student Outcomes

About the District

In the Enlarged City School District of Middletown (ECSDM) more than 75% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch. But the district of ~8000 students has been determined to erase the look and feel of poverty.  For the better part of the decade, the district has been on a mission to improve student outcomes and switch from what former superintendent Ken Eastwood called “teacher-centered to student-centered.”

The Challenge

ECSDM wanted to address a widening achievement gap, low test scores and low graduation rates. At its core, Middletown wanted to ensure that being poor did not determine outcomes or limit potential.

The Solution: Consulting Services + Technology

The district identified that moving towards more student-centered models, and integrating technology and instruction, would lead to higher student achievement, higher student engagement and the development of critical life-long skills.

Middletown hired Education Elements to support its transformation to student-centered learning.  Beginning in 2013, Ed Elements has supported the district in a shift to personalized learning, as well as helped the district with the selection of digital content and tools, the adoption of OER, the design of a new high school and, most recently, is working with the district on building leadership capacity and org design.

Middletown knew technology was a crucial lever.  Students and teachers use Google Chromebooks, Google Classrooms, and all G-Suite tools, along with digital content.

The Results

Test scores in Middletown, NY continue to rise every year.
Proficiency gains on the NWEA MAP test have moved from 44% to 62% in Math and 40% to 57% in ELA.

“We would not be where we are today if we did not have both the Google technology our students and teachers need in our classrooms and the coaching, support and professional development from Education Elements to make sure the instructional strategies are in place. We are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished because of the partnerships we have put in place.”
