With the recent New York State Education Department's memo on the use of Indigenous and Native American mascots and state Supreme Court decision confirming that school districts are prohibited from utilizing Native American imagery for mascot, logo, or branding purposes, many districts are navigating significant changes in identity this year. While most of these districts have a cultural commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, they are now finding the need to make those commitments explicit through the process of changing their mascot.
