While most districts have a cultural commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging that is represented in their mission, vision, values, many find it hard to make those commitments visible and actionable.
That is why numerous districts across NY state work with Education Elements to engage their community, listen deeply, and design visuals that represent the district’s vision - all while honoring the traditions of the community.
Waterloo Central School District, located in the Finger Lakes region of New York, found itself in a change management challenge and reached out to its longstanding partners Education Elements for help. The district, which had historically been known as the Indians, wanted to rebrand its mascot to one that was more inclusive. Together, Waterloo and Education Elements designed a process in which community input was included through surveys and a new mascot design process involving a core group of staff, students and community members. Superintendent Terri Davis shares about the process: "We made the mascot search and rebranding process about the kids. All steps is the process we’re crafted through a student cantered lens. We used our strategic plan mission, vision and values to guide us, including all interested stakeholders."
