ON OUR MINDS

Wow! New York is on fire with the desire to personalize learning for students! Currently, 18 districts and 2 BOCES are rethinking their school structures and instructional approach to ensure that over 45,000 students get what they need, when they need it. FEATURED STORIES AND SHOUTOUTS

Dundee Central School.png

Shout-out to districts in the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES for starting a cross-district collaborative on personalized learning! The collaborative was inspired by the leadership team at Dundee Central School who hosted teachers, coaches, and district leaders from Geneva City School District, Marion Central School District, and Penn Yan Central School District. Participants shared their tips and tricks for personalized learning in their classrooms, and then followed a consultancy protocol to work through struggles they have had with implementing personalized learning. The group plans to reconvene several times this year.

Participants shared:

  • "I learned a ton from several teachers who were further along than I regarding playlists, blended space, and providing individual learning paths.”
  • “Others are in the same boat and it was nice to have other teachers interested in what I was doing around PL."
For more information about the collaborative, contact Dundee Superintendent Kelly Houck at khouck@dundeecs.org.

Romulus large.png

Personalized Learning is in full force in Romulus Central School! Teachers, students, parents and administrators are “ALL IN” with talking about, working with and growing skill sets which are drastically changing the district’s instructional practice.

Romulus credits their focus on teacher input with the success and continued positivity for personalized learning. Romulus tapped six teachers to join the administrative staff to serve on the “PL Council,” or leadership team.

On October 23, the Romulus team will present at the School Administrator’s Association of New York State (SAANYS) annual conference in Cooperstown, NY. If you are at the conference, please consider joining the Romulus team at 11am in the Natty Room for “21st Century, Student-Centered Education in Action.” Contact Lynn Rhone at lrhone@romuluscsd.org for more information.

Gananda.png

Our final shoutout goes to Gananda Central School District which has started the year hosting "PL Hangouts" with cohorts of teachers. The purpose of the hangouts is to ask questions, and to share ideas and resources. Teachers have discussed goal setting, flexible seating, station rotations, and fitting the NYS modules into this work.

As Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment and Project Lead Kelly Van Laeken shared, “We’ve had unbelievably high level collegial conversations!  Everyone walked out having learned something from each other in less than 50 minutes.” For ideas on how to run PL Hangouts, contact Kelly at kvanlaeken@gananda.org
