California Dreamin: Sunshine and Playbooks for Personalized Learning

Personalized Learning  |  EE Summit

California and sunshine

As the snow continues to fall out east, in the west we’ve got sunshine on the brain. That’s because we’re planning to bring hundreds of personalized learning leaders to the California’s Silicon Valley for the Education Elements Personalized Learning Summit in May (and yes, the average San Jose temp in May is 82°F).

We’ve secured some phenomenal keynote speakers for the PL Summit, including Jaime Casap, Google Global Education Evangelist; Adam Pisoni, Co-Founder of Yammer and CVP of Business Transformation at Microsoft; and Anthony Kim, Founder of Education Elements. At the office we know Anthony as the guy who is constantly talking about triathlons and data visualization, but he is also an avid cook, skier, and writer. He recently published a special edition preface to Blended and this May will release his Personalized Learning Playbook, a guide to help district leaders create a compelling vision for personalized learning. This playbook is based on Anthony’s work with more than 200 schools and districts to design and launch personalized learning. Through this experience, Anthony has found that there is a deep need for district leadership to share an evocative vision that inspires staff to resist the magnetic pull of the status quo. Through real-world examples and witty anecdotes, the Playbook outlines effective methods that district leaders can use to communicate with and inspire their teams to transform factory-model school systems.

Attendees at the PL Summit will receive an exclusive, early copy of the Personalized Learning Playbook. Anthony will also lead an interactive workshop at the PL Summit to dive deeper into key points from the Playbook.  Participants will leave this workshop, like all workshops at our Summit with actionable plans, real-world examples and a set of tools.

The PL Summit will also be an opportunity to visit some of the schools and districts that Anthony and the EE team have supported to launch personalized learning - like Milpitas Unified School District, where Anthony helped them develop a foundation for their work through working with them on design-thinking. Milpitas has been applauded for it’s supportive, innovative, and thoughtful approach to launching blended learning district-wide. We’re thrilled to be able to tour one of Milpitas’ phenomenal blended learning schools, Burnett Elementary, as part of our PL Summit in May. You can learn more about the Milpitas blended learning program in this recent EdWeek article. In addition to Milpitas, we’ve also secured tours at Alpha’s Blanca Alvarado Middle School, Lighthouse Community Charter School, and some of Silicon Valley’s most innovative companies, including Google, EdSurge, Shutterfly, and Coursera.
